Breakdown of South Africa's State of the Nation Address 2025

This year's theme, 'A Nation That Works, For All,' sets the stage for a crucial address that will shape South Africa's future. 

The address outlined the government's priorities and plans for the coming year. Here's a brief breakdown of the key points:

1. Government of National Unity

• Ramaphosa highlighted the formation of a Government of National Unity following the 2024 elections

• Adoption of a Medium-Term Development Plan for the next five years

2. Economic Growth and Job Creation

• Set a target of 3% GDP growth

• Focus on inclusive growth, job creation, and poverty reduction

• Announced a R20 billion transformation fund to support black-owned and small businesses

3. Infrastructure and Investment

• Allocated over R940 billion towards infrastructure over the next three years

• R375 billion to be spent by state-owned companies

4. State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs)

• Progress in rebuilding Eskom and overcoming loadshedding

• Efforts to stabilize Transnet and Metro Rail

• Establishment of a dedicated SOE reform unit

5. Education and Skills Development

• Expansion of early childhood development access

• Implementation of the BELA Act, making Grade R compulsory

• Focus on combining formal learning with practical job training

6. Digital Transformation

• Introduction of an electronic travel authorization system

• Aim to have 80% of government services available online by 2027

7. Crime and Security

• Establishment of the National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide

• Creation of a permanent Investigating Directorate Against Corruption within the NPA

8. International Relations

• Defiant stance against international pressure, stating "We will not be bullied"

• Reaffirmation of South Africa's commitment to peace, justice, and equality

9. Local Government Reform

• Plans to establish professionally managed utilities for water and electricity services

• Development of an updated White Paper on Local Government

10. National Dialogue

• Call for a National Dialogue to chart a new path for the country
